Hickory is one of the hardest, strongest, and most durable domestic hardwoods available. With an average Janka hardness rating of approximately 1,820 lbf, hickory is harder than oak and well suited for projects that require exceptional strength, impact resistance, and long-lasting performance.

Our unfinished hickory hardwood boards are available in two convenient options:

• S4S (Surfaced Four Sides): Clean, smooth faces and edges, ready to use for DIY projects with minimal additional preparation.
• S2S1E (Surfaced Two Sides, One Edge): Two smooth faces and one clean edge, providing a more economical option for woodworkers who plan to perform additional milling, sizing, or edge work.

Hickory Characteristics and Uses

Hickory is an exceptionally hard, strong, and durable wood with excellent resistance to wear, impact, and abrasion. Its bold grain and natural color variations—from light cream and tan to warm brown, often with darker mineral streaks—give each board a unique, rustic appearance.

Hickory can be sanded and finished beautifully, but its density requires sharp tools and careful machining. It is an excellent choice for furniture, tables, cabinets, doors, countertops, workbenches, flooring, stairs, shelving, cutting boards, butcher blocks, tool handles, and other demanding DIY and woodworking projects. Its distinctive character also makes it ideal for rustic, farmhouse, and industrial-style designs.
