    Product Description

Shakertown R&R Grooved Cedar Sidewall Shingles — #1 Red Cedar Sidewall Shingles

    Overview

    • Grooved, rebutted & jointed cedar sidewall shingles manufactured from kiln-dried, #1 graded Western Red Cedar.
    • Certigrade: 100% edge grain, 100% clear, 100% heartwood.
    • Conforms to CSSB-97.
    • Shingles are 18" long and approximately .45" thick at the butt.
    • Nicely trimmed sides and right‑angle butt cuts for consistent fit and a clean finish.
    • Machine‑grooved faces for a textured, attractive appearance suitable for exterior sidewalls (also usable for select interior applications).

    Exposure recommendations (sidewalls)

    • Maximum recommended exposure for double‑coursing sidewalls: 14".
    • Maximum recommended exposure for single‑coursing sidewalls: 8".
    • Note: Double course application requires an undercourse (starter course) to achieve proper coverage and installation.

    Sizes, pack & coverage

    • Individual shingles: 18" height; random widths averaging 3"–8".
    • Sold by the linear foot or by the box.

Linear foot: Sold by an 18-inch-high by 12-inch-wide section of shingles. Coverage per linear foot (18" tall × 12" wide section):

        • 7" exposure: 0.583 sq ft per lf
        • 8" exposure (single course max recommended): 0.667 sq ft per lf
        • 9" exposure: 0.75 sq ft per lf
        • 10" exposure: 0.833 sq ft per lf
        • 11" exposure: 0.917 sq ft per lf
        • 12" exposure: 1.00 sq ft per lf
        • 13" exposure: 1.083 sq ft per lf
        • 14" exposure (double course max recommended): 1.167 sq ft per lf

Box: Nominal box coverage is approximately 86 sq. ft. before waste. For convenience, coverage is shown by exposure and scaled from the per-linear-foot values to an 86 sq. ft. box, rounded to the nearest whole square foot. Coverage per box:

        • 6" exposure: 43 sq ft
        • 7" exposure: 50 sq ft
        • 8" exposure: 57 sq ft
        • 9" exposure: 64 sq ft
        • 10" exposure: 72 sq ft
        • 11" exposure: 79 sq ft
        • 12" exposure: 86 sq ft
        • 13" exposure: 93 sq ft
        • 14" exposure: 100 sq ft

     Ordering & waste

    • Add approximately 10% waste for cuts, starter pieces, corners, openings, and installation conditions.
    • Example: At 12" exposure, a box covers approximately 86 sq ft before waste; allow for ~10% waste (practical net coverage ≈ 77.4 sq ft).

    Recommended fasteners

Use corrosion-resistant fasteners designed for exterior cedar applications:

    • Stainless steel ring-shank nails are the preferred choice, especially in coastal, wet, or high-humidity environments.
    • Hot-dipped galvanized ring-shank nails are also suitable where permitted by local codes and the shingle manufacturer.
    • Avoid electro-galvanized, bright steel, or other fasteners that may rust or react with cedar’s natural tannins.
    • Select a nail length that provides at least 1½ inches of penetration into the sheathing or framing, without extending through the wall.

    Installation tips

    • Install shingles over a suitable, code-compliant weather-resistant barrier and properly flashed wall assembly.
    • Begin with a starter course and maintain the manufacturer’s recommended exposure, side gaps, and joint spacing.
    • Stagger vertical joints between courses so that joints do not align in adjacent rows.
    • Use two fasteners per shingle, positioned according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and typically just above the exposure line.
    • Drive nails flush with the shingle surface—do not overdrive or countersink them, as this can cause splitting and water penetration.
    • Keep fasteners away from edges and ends to reduce splitting.
    • Use compatible flashing around windows, doors, corners, roof intersections, and other changes in wall plane.
    • Allow adequate airflow behind the shingles where required by the wall design, and keep the installation clear of roof surfaces and horizontal ledges where moisture can collect.
    • Follow the shingle manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes, which take precedence if requirements differ.

    Important notes

    • The maximum recommended exposures are provided to ensure proper weather performance and sidewall appearance:
      • Use up to 14" exposure only when installing as a double‑coursed sidewall assembly (with undercourse).
      • Use up to 8" exposure for single‑coursed sidewall applications.
    • Verify local building codes and installation details for flashing, starter courses, and fastener patterns.

Posted by Jacob P on 17th Apr 2026

Not often that you find (1) what you need (2) in quantities you need (3) well packaged (4) shipped fast. Feels like I found a real gem here. I could only find these wood shingles in $400 bundles in my home state. Got these shipped from across the country. Exactly what I needed to do some repair around a new electrical panel instal. Thank you!

      Rushing to beat the rest

Posted by Michael Godbey on 6th Aug 2018

I needed the shingles and I needed them fast. Total Wood delivered two orders, the 1 foot sample and my order (R & R Cedar shingles) within one week. They beat two other competitors in a head to head competition of delivering the 1 foot sample. The shingles are of the highest quality. Straight, no warps no knots.and they fit snug to each other.
