    Product Description

    • Smooth-Face Cedar Sidewall Shingles

18" #1 Western Red Cedar R&R Shakertown Shingles

Give exterior walls a clean, natural cedar finish with these smooth-face sidewall shingles. Each shingle is produced from kiln-dried, #1 Western Red Cedar and features carefully finished edges and square butt cuts for a uniform, professional installation.

      Product Details

      • Manufactured from #1 Western Red Cedar
      • Shingles are available by the linear foot or by the box.
      • 100% edge grain, clear, and heartwood under Certigrade specifications
      • Complies with CSSB-97
      • Standard length: 18"
      • Approximate butt thickness: 0.45"
      • Random widths ranging from approximately 3" to 8"
      • Rebutted and jointed for improved consistency during installation
      • Smooth, ungrooved face for a refined and understated cedar appearance
      • Designed primarily for exterior sidewalls; may also be suitable for select interior applications

The smooth surface highlights the natural character of the cedar while providing a versatile profile that works well with traditional, contemporary, and rustic designs.

      Recommended Wall Exposure

The appropriate exposure depends on whether the shingles are installed in a single- or double-course assembly:

      • Single-course application: Up to 8" exposure
      • Double-course application: Up to 14" exposure

When using a double-course installation, install an undercourse or starter course beneath the exposed shingles to provide proper coverage and weather protection.

    • Approximate Linear Foot Coverage

    • One linear foot represents an 18"-high by 12"-wide section of installed shingles. Approximate coverage is as follows:

      Exposure Per Lft.
      6" 0.50 sq. ft.
      7" 0.583 sq. ft.
      8" 0.667 sq. ft.
      9" 0.75 sq. ft.
      10" 0.833 sq. ft.
      11" 0.917 sq. ft.
      12" 1.00 sq. ft.
      13" 1.083 sq. ft.
      14" 1.167 sq. ft.

      Approximate Box Coverage

A standard box provides approximately 86 sq. ft. of nominal coverage before waste. Actual coverage changes with the selected exposure:

      Exposure Approximate Box Coverage
      6" 43 sq. ft.
      7" 50 sq. ft.
      8" 57 sq. ft.
      9" 64 sq. ft.
      10" 72 sq. ft.
      11" 79 sq. ft.
      12" 86 sq. ft.
      13" 93 sq. ft.
      14" 100 sq. ft.

Coverage figures are approximate and should be used for estimating purposes only.

      Planning for Waste

Plan to purchase approximately 10% extra material to account for:

      • Starter courses and cut pieces
      • Corners and transitions
      • Windows, doors, and other openings
      • Pattern layout and joint staggering
      • Jobsite handling and installation conditions

For example, at a 12" exposure, a box provides approximately 86 sq. ft. before waste. With a 10% allowance, practical installed coverage is approximately 77 sq. ft.

      Fastener Recommendations

Use fasteners that are compatible with cedar and approved for exterior applications.

      • Stainless steel ring-shank nails are recommended, especially in marine, coastal, or consistently damp climates.
      • Hot-dipped galvanized ring-shank nails may be used where allowed by applicable codes and installation requirements.
      • Do not use bright steel or electro-galvanized fasteners, which may corrode or react with cedar tannins.
      • Fasteners should penetrate at least 1½" into the wall sheathing or framing without passing through the wall assembly.
      • Position nails away from shingle edges and ends to minimize the risk of splitting.

      Installation Considerations

Install the shingles as part of a properly designed and flashed wall system.

      • Use a code-compliant weather-resistant barrier behind the shingles.
      • Install the required starter or undercourse before beginning the main field courses.
      • Maintain consistent exposure and the side spacing recommended for the product and wall assembly.
      • Offset joints from one course to the next; avoid lining up vertical joints in adjacent rows.
      • Use two fasteners per shingle, placed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
      • Set nails flush with the wood surface. Avoid overdriving or countersinking.
      • Flash windows, doors, corners, roof intersections, and all changes in wall direction.
      • Provide drainage and ventilation behind the shingles where required by the wall design.
      • Keep the bottom edges away from horizontal surfaces or locations where water can remain trapped.

      Application Reminder

For the best balance of appearance and weather resistance:

      • Limit single-course installations to an exposure of 8" or less.
      • Use exposures up to 14" only with a properly installed double-course assembly and undercourse.
      • Always confirm the final installation method with current manufacturer instructions, local building codes, and project-specific flashing requirements.

This were better that I expected. They were all nearly 12 inches wide and in great shape. They made my repairs look quite professional. Thanks

      Cedar Shingles

Posted by Ryan on 21st Jun 2025

Was in a bind since I only needed 4-5 pierces of cedar shakes and didn’t want to buy an entire box for hundreds of dollars. They sold me exactly what I needed and send beautiful pieces. Would highly recommend.
