These 4" Western Red Cedar Timbers are a construction grade. Timbers actually measure 3-1/2" thick and are S4S, surfaced on both faces and both edges. Timbers are often used for interior mantels and exterior support beams. Western red cedar is very stable, but is softer than doug fir and pine.
Timbers come in wet. There may be some drying that occurs before you receive the board. Please allow board to dry to a 15% to 19% moisture rate before sealing or coating. Construction grade allows for rustic knots. As this wood dries, it is typical to get checks and cracks in the wood.
Western Red Cedar is a softwood known for its stability, straight grain and durability in exterior climates. This lumber is naturally resistant to rot and decay without any treatment. Western Red Cedar is normally reddish-brown in color. Color will vary from board to board. This wood ages to a natural silver-gray color when left unfinished outdoors. Western Red Cedar is very popular to use in exterior projects like decks, garden beds, arbors, fences, shingles, and siding to name just a few. This wood is sometimes favored over treated yellow pine for exterior projects due to it being lighter and more stable. Cedar does have acid properties which can be corrosive to some metals, therefore copper, stainless steel or galvanized nails or screws should be used when using the wood exterior.

Good quality lumber and careful packaging
I ordered a 4x8 cedar lumber from the Total Wood Store because I do not want to visit the local lumberyard in person due to the pandemic. The purchase cost and shipping of this item were on the high side. However, I was pleasantly surprised when FedEx ground dropped the package near my door. The lumber was protected with cardboard pieces along all edges inside the outer cardboard box. I ordered lumber online from other lumberyards in the past, and the lumber never arrived protected this way. I will likely order more lumber from Total Wood Store if the pandemic will not subside soon.
