Western Red Cedar Timbers
Our Western Red Cedar timbers are a versatile choice for both interior and exterior projects. They are ideal for mantels, heavy-duty shelving, outdoor furniture, poolside storage, grill stations, support beams, and other residential or commercial applications.
These construction-grade timbers are S4S—surfaced on all four sides—and measure approximately 3-1/2 inches thick after surfacing.
Sizes:
- 4" × 6"
- 4" × 8"
- 4" × 10"
Lengths:
- 4' and 6' lengths
Western Red Cedar is a stable, straight-grained softwood known for its natural durability and resistance to rot and decay. It is lighter and generally more stable than treated yellow pine, making it a popular choice for outdoor projects. Cedar is softer than Douglas fir and pine, so it may be more susceptible to dents and surface wear.
Color ranges from reddish-brown to light amber and will vary from board to board. When left unfinished outdoors, Western Red Cedar naturally weathers to a silver-gray color.
Timbers may arrive wet or with elevated moisture content. Some drying may occur before delivery. Allow the wood to dry to approximately 15%–19% moisture content before sealing, staining, or applying a finish. Because these are construction-grade timbers, natural knots and other rustic characteristics are expected. As the wood dries, checks, cracks, and minor dimensional changes are normal and should be anticipated.
When using Western Red Cedar outdoors, use copper, stainless steel, or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners. Cedar’s natural acids can be corrosive to some metals and may cause staining or premature fastener deterioration.

Good quality lumber and careful packaging
I ordered a 4x8 cedar lumber from the Total Wood Store because I do not want to visit the local lumberyard in person due to the pandemic. The purchase cost and shipping of this item were on the high side. However, I was pleasantly surprised when FedEx ground dropped the package near my door. The lumber was protected with cardboard pieces along all edges inside the outer cardboard box. I ordered lumber online from other lumberyards in the past, and the lumber never arrived protected this way. I will likely order more lumber from Total Wood Store if the pandemic will not subside soon.
