Product Description
Western Red Cedar Rough 4 x 4 x 6' Timbers — Pack of 2
This pack includes two Western Red Cedar timbers, each measuring approximately 4" x 4" x 6'. These rough-sawn, #2-grade timbers are ideal for garden beds, landscaping, and a variety of exterior construction projects.
The timbers are green, meaning they have not been air-dried or kiln-dried before arriving at the yard. They are left rough and may contain knots and other natural characteristics associated with #2-grade lumber. Because of their rough finish and moisture content, actual thickness may vary from approximately 3-5/8" to 3-7/8".
Rough 4 x 4 Western Red Cedar is available in 6' lengths only.
Naturally Durable for Outdoor Use
Western Red Cedar is a softwood valued for its stability, straight grain, lightweight feel, and natural resistance to rot and decay. It does not require chemical treatment for many outdoor applications. However, its service life will vary depending on moisture exposure, soil contact, drainage, climate, installation, and maintenance.
When left unfinished outdoors, Western Red Cedar typically weathers from its natural reddish-brown color to a silvery gray. Color variation between boards is normal. Applying a quality exterior sealer or stain can help maintain the wood’s color and provide additional protection from moisture and weathering.
Project Uses
Rough Western Red Cedar timbers can be used for many indoor and outdoor projects, including:
- Raised garden beds and vegetable gardens
- Landscape borders and garden edging
- Retaining-wall accents and terracing
- Planter boxes and compost bins
- Trellises, arbors, and pergolas
- Fences, gates, and privacy screens
- Deck framing accents and outdoor structures
- Benches, tables, and other outdoor furniture
- Playhouse, shed, and cabin projects
- Decorative landscaping and rustic woodworking projects
- Exterior siding, trim, and architectural details
Cedar performs especially well outdoors because it naturally resists decay and is relatively stable in changing weather conditions. For projects with direct or constant soil contact, standing water, or high moisture exposure, proper drainage and periodic inspection are recommended to help extend the life of the wood.
Fastener Recommendation
Western Red Cedar contains natural acids that may corrode some metals. For best results, use stainless steel, copper, ceramic-coated, or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners. Avoid using untreated or standard steel fasteners, which may rust and discolor the wood.
