Enhancing the Longevity of Your Western Red Cedar
To maximize the lifespan and beauty of your Western Red Cedar, especially when used at ground level, consider the following care and maintenance tips:
-
Apply a Protective Finish:
- Use a high-quality water-repellent wood preservative, such as WoodLife, sold separately, to enhance the longevity of the cedar. This will protect the wood from moisture and UV radiation. Reapply as recommended by the product manufacturer.
-
Ensure Proper Drainage:
- Avoid direct contact with soil. Use a gravel or stone base and provide good drainage to reduce moisture retention and minimize the risk of rot.
-
Regular Maintenance:
- Inspect the cedar periodically for signs of wear, damage, or insect activity, and perform necessary repairs promptly.
-
Seal Cut Ends:
- When cutting cedar boards, seal the cut ends with a suitable wood sealer to prevent water absorption.
-
Reduce Exposure to Moisture:
- Clear debris and leaves from around the cedar to encourage airflow and prevent water from pooling around the wood.
- Use Proper Fasteners:
-
- Utilize non-corrosive fasteners such as stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized nails and screws to prevent staining and ensure structural integrity.
By taking these precautions and utilizing wood preservatives, you can significantly extend the life of your Western Red Cedar projects, keeping them looking beautiful and performing well for years to come.

Wrong material
Material was similar in thickness to the 1x4’s that were shipped. They were not 2”. ********** Comment from TotalWoodStore: In following up with customer and checking the shipping, yes, this was the wrong material shipped. You received the 1x material, not the 2x. We're glad you were still able to make material work for your project. A partial refund was provided to customer.

Not all sunshine and roses
I purchased this material to rebuild a bench in a Finnish sauna. Of the six 7’10” pieces I received, four are of a quality suitable to be graded as S4S. Two however are quite rough on one surface and do not qualify as graded. I can make these work but I’ll have to hide the unfinished/rough surfaces by ensuring they are not exposed in the final product.

Good quality and careful packaging
I ordered a 2x8 cedar lumber from the Total Wood Store because I do not want to visit the local lumberyard in person due to the pandemic. The purchase cost and shipping of this item were on the high side. However, I was pleasantly surprised when FedEx ground dropped the package near my door. The lumber was protected with cardboard pieces along all edges inside the outer cardboard box. I ordered lumber online from other lumberyards in the past, and the lumber never arrived protected this way. I will likely order more lumber from Total Wood Store if the pandemic will not subside soon.
